He told me about the Saxon Club which I had heard of vaguely but I didn't realize it was a club celebrating German culture. My family moved to this country so many generations ago that our German heritage had already been thoroughly blended into American culture. To us "German" people were Amish. I found out there is a Saxon Club near where I grew up but we never were a part of it, it never even came into the sphere of our existence.
At any rate this Saxon Club has on its schedule an Oktoberfest coming up. I am expecting it to be far more authentic than the festivals I have been to before that have called themselves Oktoberfest. I think most of them just use the name as an excuse to have a community festival but aren't really trying to be German at all. One thing that's funny about this one is it's not October.
So I invited a bunch of friends to go with us and check it out. Unfortunately we were not able to go until near the end of the festival and it was raining quite badly so I don't know if those were factors but it didn't seem like much of a festival to us. Most of the authentic German dishes served were sold out. There were no booths or crafts like I was expecting but we did enjoy some people in costume and plenty of music. All in all it was a rather disappointing event for us but I plan to watch for it next year before I decide that I gave it a fair shake.
