Today I helped with putting on a surprise birthday party for Joe. Melissa wanted to do something special since he is turning 30.
She ordered chicken and pizza from his favorite places and cake and a big cookie. We wanted to have a bonfire, but the weather is terrible--raining steady and pretty cold too. Bryan and I got tables and chairs, picked up the meal, set up the house, and welcomed the guests while Melissa kept Joe occupied at the church trunk or treat with assistance from J and Sami.
He definitely was surprised--he didn't have a clue until he saw all the cars at the house. You usually have to alter your expectations when dealing with a phlegmatic personality like Joe because most express their feelings in a much more subdued manner than others, especially a sanguine! Lack of enthusiasm doesn't mean they are not pleased.
Quite a few people were not able to come and then part way through the evening, Joe got a call that his grandfather was ailing. Thankfully, he lives only a few blocks away, so they were able to slip over and be with the family. His grandpa has been having more issues since he entered his 90's but it was still a surprise to hear he had slipped away in his sleep today. It made the evening end on a much more somber tone.
