Hermeneutics Side by Side IV

Back to Jude:

I chose not to do word study on any of the main words in verse 2--mercy, peace, love, and multiplied--since my main goal is to do a broader overview of the book.

However, any time I have done it in other passages this has always been a rich and rewarding study if you choose to do it.

Verse 3 explains that Jude had been planning on writing for some time but on a different and more basic topic--salvation in general. However, something must have happened to change his mind, and also to up his urgency.

The Strong's interlinear would read like this:
Beloved while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation
I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith
which was once for all handed down to the saints.

So he had been making "every effort" but then felt the "necessity" to change the topic of his letter. This effort had not resulted in a letter, but the necessity caused a letter to actually be written. This leads me to believe that it was far more important to him.

Again word studies can be done on effort, necessity, and appealing as well as handed down. But I am more interested in looking into "contend earnestly."
