The books of History continue the chronology where Genesis through Deuteronomy left off. Joshua was the successor of Moses and he began a time of governing by judges followed by the establishment of a king. Then we follow the succession of Kings until the nation of Israel is captured and taken into captivity by Babylon and Assyria.
There are many rich stories in this section: the walls of Jericho falling down, Samson and Delilah, David and Goliath, Elijah defeating the prophets of Baal, and Esther becoming queen and saving her people.
It is important to realize these books primarily tell the story of what factually happened and does not necessarily advocate anyone copying the things that happened. We do well to analyze the outcomes of the choices of the people in these stories and to apply that wisdom to our own lives but they are not to be taken as command.
