Books of the Bible--Exodus

The book of Exodus picks up pretty much where Genesis leaves off. There is a gap of about 400 years but we have the same group of people in the same country. The Israelites had moved to Egypt to escape the big famine and in the intervening time had become subjugated to the Egyptians and forced into slavery.

So God called Moses to lead them out of slavery and take them back to the land he had promised Abraham way back in Genesis 12.

In Exodus are the story of the baby in the bulrushes, The burning bush, the 10 plagues, the institution of the Passover feast the Ten Commandments, the golden calf, the building of the Tabernacle, and eating manna. Favorite verses are the Ten Commandments in chapter 20 and Moses asking to see God's glory in 32:18-24.

Some familiar phrases we might know from these stories are "flowing with milk and honey", "let my people go",  and "the cleft of the rock".

This book was written by Moses too and this time he was present for almost all of it. It is such an example of God's power and faithfulness to His people that it is the epitome of examples throughout the rest of the Bible and to this day!
