Love Comes Softly by Jeanette Oke
This has been such a busy month, I am reverting to an easy review that I could do from memory! This is a very old favorite of mine and I love to read it over again. It is the story of a young woman, Marty, who travels west during the pioneer days of America. Before her husband can file a homestead claim, he is killed in an accident, leaving the poor girl alone with little means to support herself.
A man, Clark, approaches her while the minister is still in town and suggests a practical solution to her dilemma which will also help him out of his: allow the minister to marry them, take care of his little daughter and he will provide for her over the winter and give her passage back east to her family in the spring. Of course she is horrified but also resigned to the fact that there are no better choices for her than this.
Over the course of the winter, she discovers that this man has some kind of relationship with God that she's never seen before and also that she could actually care for him.
The author wonderfully portrays the honest struggles of life, love, and faith through the characters and creates a solid foundation for a series of novels following Clark and Marty for generations.
