Books of the Bible

The Bible is more than just a book. It is actually a book of books.

There are 66 books in the Bible written by over 40 authors in three different languages in several different genres on three separate continents over a period of 1500 years.

The Bible has two main divisions the Old Testament with 39 books and the New Testament with 27 books.

The Bible can be further divided by genre.

The first division is known as the Law or the Pentateuch. There are five books written or transcribed by Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

The second division is History. These 12 books are Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1st and 2nd Samuel, 1st and 2nd Kings, 1st and 2nd Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther.

The third division is the Writings or Poetry. It is composed of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon (or Song of Songs).

The 4th Division is the Prophets. This group can be divided into the major prophets and the Minor Prophets. The Major Prophets are Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel. The Minor Prophets are Hosea. Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakuk, Zephaniah, Hagai, Zachariah, and Malachi.

Conveniently, there I is a pattern to them which makes it easier to understand and remember.  The pattern is 5, 12, 5, 5, 12.
