Recently someone gave us some turnips. Never bought turnips before, never cooked with them, don't remember ever even tasting them. So I looked up some recipes and decided the first one I would try is to add one to my beef stew that I always make.
I thought they had very little flavor and didn't even hardly notice them in the stew. Bryan didn't mind them either. Or seem to. So, great: add a little extra nutrition to a staple recipe, use up free groceries.
A week later, make beef stew again. This time I throw in several turnips because I want to use them up before they go bad. (Don't know how or when they go bad, but they must, right?) So I go through the whole procedure. As usual, I take out my portion before I put the gravy in that Bryan loves. I usually put 1/3 aside for me to eat in a couple days and he eats about 2/3 in a couple days.
This time he says he absolutely hates it. Can't stand the flavor. Won't eat it. Made himself some other supper. I don't understand what made it so different from last time. Now I'm stuck because I don't want to throw out this good food. I feel compelled to finish all the beef stew myself before it goes to waste. And I made mushroom gravy this time instead of plain beef gravy! Maybe I'll try to freeze some so I don't have to have it so many days in a row!
