Book of the Month: The Challengers
by Grace Livingston Hill
In some ways this book was typical GHL fare -- which is fine because I like her style -- but there were some things about it that I did like more than some of her other books.
I like how there was not a tug-of-war over each of the older children by two opposite suitors like there is in so many of her stories.
I like how the main focus of the book was not in the romance although there was romance hinted.
I like how it involved the whole family.
I like how it showed them working hard and trying everything they could think of and not giving up.
I like how several of them despaired of coming through their trials, because that is how real people sometimes react to similar situations.
But I didn't like the quick easy answer of an inheritance to solve all their problem. I would rather have seen them continue to work little by little by little and their hard work being rewarded because that's how real life usually goes. We are not just dropped an inheritance out of the sky.
