In my One Year Bible reading plan I have been reading lately Jeremiah. I am several days behind LOL but I'm not giving up. This passage in chapter 6 through 9 of Jeremiah hit me today. It was saying that the prophets were falsely reporting that there would be peace and good things and everything was all right when that was not at all true.
People were in sin and offering sacrifices without repentance. There's a similar passages nearby talking about the idols that they served and the fact that they literally dug the gold out of the ground and chopped the trees down and fashioned these statues made out of this inanimate materials and yet with that knowledge still prayed to them and somehow expected those pieces of wood and gold to take care of them and to have power to change anything. They had to have been self deceived. Others were deceived by people, such as the false prophets.
And I think there are many many preachers and Christians today that are deceiving others. Maybe they have deceived themselves or maybe they were deceived by others. I pray to God none of them are purposely deceptive but that is certainly probably true as well.
It reminded me of that scene in the Bruce Willis movie where terrorists take over the airport and all the planes are forced to stay flying in circles and running out of fuel. And the main terrorist orders the altimeter to be set 200 ft lower than it actually is and guides a plane to "land" step by step. They are so happy that they are finally going to be on the ground before they run out of fuel and crash-- unknowing that the terrorist is purposely leading them to their deaths.
crashing them into the ground and exploded.
It grieves me so it and breaks my heart that there are so many people symbolically on a plane like that, heading for the ground and going to die in a fiery explosion, and they don't even know it because there are leaders who are deceiving, who are allowing themselves to be deceived, or not studying the Bible and searching out scripture to make sure what they're teaching is really true and allowing society and politics to water down the message that's so desperately needed.
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. I Peter 5:8
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders that would deceive even the elect, if that were possible. Mark 14:22
So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. Hebrews 2:1
