Recently I have been thinking about people who are important to American history. Of course the first to come to mind are people like George Washington, Martin Luther King jr., Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt, and Ben Franklin. But my mind has turned to those who were not Americans that actually had an influence on America.
One that came to mind was King James. Without the translation he sponsored of the Holy Bible, Christianity may not have been so widespread or as an integral part of people's thinking. It would not have saturated the values of the men who founded the country and become a thread through our founding documents.
Another that came to mind was Napoleon. Because of his lust for power or whatever his motives were, we had the opportunity to acquire the Louisiana Purchase, which enriched the country immensely in resources and space to expand and available property so people could become landowners.
I've also thought of the Vikings but I'm not sure that America really has been influenced specifically by that early discovery.
Of course Columbus who's the one credited with making the existence of America well-known regardless of his mistaken identification of it.
And of course King George. It was due to his selfish demand for support and tax money without regard for the colonists that spurred the Revolutionary War.
