Not the Truth

Today I went to the funeral of one of my co-worker's grandpa. There were prayers and readings and candles and songs. Some members of the family shared memories of his life and what he meant to them.  I found it very comforting except one part.

As we were closing the service the officiant said that now that we had prayed and anointed the casket that he would be able to go to heaven now. But this is contrary to what Scripture says. The Bible says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (II Corinthians 5:8).  If not, then where was he during that time period between Monday and the funeral today? Did we have to wait until someone said a prayer and sprinkled some oil before we can have peace that he is at rest and with the Lord?

No, the spirit does not go about without a body (II Corinthians 5:3). I didn't realize there was this kind of false teaching even in our Christian churches.  It just goes to show you have to keep your eyes open and your mind alert anywhere you go.
