Keeping Scripture Memorized

Recently I have been reading through the Psalms.  I have recognized many of them from the back of my memory.   And I have noticed that one  common factor from the times this happens is that  it reminds me of a song.  It's because so many songs were written straight from scripture.

That was true more so even in the past that it is today.  Plenty of today's songs are taken from scripture but it seems mostly the concept and the idea not so much the actual wording.  A huge amount of the songs I know from my childhood in Christian School, in church and Sunday School are word for word King James Version.

Another factor in this is that years ago there was really only one reliable translation that was the King James version.  But now since many more manuscripts have been found and many more translators have created reliable translations there are more versions of scripture to memorize.  Back  in the day, anytime you memorized a scripture it was KJV and anyone else who memorized that scripture it was KJV.

Writing scripture into song has been tremendously valuable in keeping scripture in my memory.  It is so much easier to recall what you have memorized when it has been set to music.
