The Trick to Knowing God
One main attribute about God is that He is incomprehensible. Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom (Psalm 145:3 NIV). It is not possible to know Him fully. That is why Christians spend their entire lives learning to know Him. This is why the Apostle Paul, one of the greatest apostles–even after years of following Him–said about God,”That I may know Him” (Philippians 3:10).
Don’t let this fact discourage you, though! Man does not need to know everything about Him to be certain of Him. Those things that He has revealed to us, we can be sure of. The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law (Deuteronomy 29:29 HCSB).
We cannot understand how God can be three persons, yet one person. We cannot understand how Jesus can be 100% man and 100% God at the same time. Yet theses things are true. God is greater than our ability to comprehend Him because we are the creation and He is the Creator! A god that I can completely understand is no God at all to me because he would be no greater than me!
But I certainly can understand that Jesus came and was born as a baby, and that He died on a cross even though He did nothing to deserve death because He took the penalty for my sins and your sins. That has been revealed and that I can understand and that absolutely requires a response. So it is a sin for the person who knows to do what is good and doesn’t do it (Hebrews 4:17 HCSB).
